Professional Futures 4

Having worked as a freelance artist in Hong Kong from a young age, I’m no stranger to the challenges of building networks or sustaining a stable income whilst producing uncompromising creative work. Now, finding myself in a completely new city, I am faced with the task of rebuilding that foundation from the ground up.

London, while abundant in opportunities and cultural energy, can be a difficult environment in which to sustain a creative life. The high cost of living and intense competition across sectors often make it hard to prioritise artistic growth without compromises. In contrast, relocating outside London might offer greater space and affordability, but often at the cost of access to infrastructure and resources needed for experimental work.

Navigating this has taught me that sustainability as an artist is, in a way, an artistic practice. Educating myself on fundamental things like nutrition, anatomy, and even economics can be both empowering and surprisingly enjoyable. These knowledge strengthens my health and capacity to continue making work and deepen my understanding of the body and mind as vessels for creative expression. My spirit and body are not separate from the work, my spirit and body are a vessel for art to perform life.
