Mementos is an original short film based on an excerpt from my zine, “Don’t Go Soft on Me”, published in 2022 alongside my album “Yesterdays Impressions”. In that album, I constructed sounds with field recordings and samples, along with my instrumental and voice recordings, making the album very cinematic. I consider this video a kind of follow-up to the album. As with the LP, I mainly used samples that contained different playing and ambiance to structure the sound for this film. I cannot explain precisely what this film is about. I feel like it would be superfluous and killing the work. Sometimes, works just don’t like to be explained. Every sound produced in this piece is with a story. To achieve a human sound, I must reach for human touch, hence the reason for using audio recordings of human activities.
In this project, I want to experiment with two things. Essentially, to emphasize the usage of suggestive sound imagery to pair up with film visuals and be minimal and precise in sound placement. I believe this approach will engage the audience to actively perceive and interlace the connection between them, rather than feeding the film or music to the already sophisticated audience like an infant spitting out their food.
